From Left 4 Dead to Dead Rising to Call of Duty, many designers are looking to cash in on the zombie craze currently at large. Konami and Nihilistic have targeted the Xbox Live Arcade and Playstation Network for an old school arcade style zombie shooter of their own dubbed Zombie Apocalypse.
The objective is simple… fend off countless waves of zombie attacks in the hope you can last 55 days. Zombie Apocalypse takes the infection to your band of warriors with a bird’s eye view and a classic dual analog stick Smash TV style of control. You have the option of choosing one of four survivors to unleash hell upon wave after wave of undead zombies across 7 different maps. The survivors are armed with a basic pea-shooter and a trusty chainsaw at first…but quickly have the ability to obtain additional “enhanced” tools of death as the game progresses. Shotty’s, RPG’s, Flame Throwers…they’re all included, but on a limited ammo basis.
Nihilistic has also included a multiplayer option to the game allowing you and 3 of your pals to join forces against the infected army. Same single player game concept applies in multiplayer land, except you face a lot more enemies per day.
Overall, this is a decent game. Having grown up through the Nintendo NES and CGA graphic PC days, I’m a fan of nostalgic gaming. I can appreciate what was laid out in the game. With that being said, I quickly found the single player mode a repetitive bore after playing through the first couple of days. On the other hand, the multiplayer aspects were pretty entertaining and intense. Not because multiplayer was really any different than the single player experience, but having the ability to yell and curse at the screen with buddies turned out to be a lot of fun.
The graphics are a bit suspect, but generally did not become a distraction. Sound? Average. You won’t catch me listening to this on the home theater stereo system.
Nihilistic’s Zombie Apocalypse probably won’t make your top 25 games of all time, but will provide some basic and good zombie killing fun.
